This is a major work for Concert Band or Symphonic Wind Band, based on the melodies of songs by Scotland's national bard, Robert Burns.
It has been widely performed, recorded and broadcast. It was played by the Massed Bands of H.M. Royal Marines at the Mountbatten Festival of Music in 1987, and subsequently broadcast on BBC Radio 3. The North American première was given by the Kalamazoo Concert Band, Michigan, USA in 2009, conducted by the composer.
There are five movements, which can be played separately but are best performed as a suite. The movements which would stand best on their own are the lively and humorous Scherzo or the slow and well-known Intermezzo.
